‘Fuel supply chain can deliver for net zero’, conference told

24 April 2024

Collaboration, communication and clarity are needed for the nuclear fuel supply chain to help countries deliver on their climate change goals.

Urenco’s Head of Commercial Intelligence, John Paul Jones, made the point at the World Nuclear Fuel Cycle conference in Almaty, Kazakhstan on April 17.

Speaking on a Fuel Services Supply panel, John-Paul said the three qualities, applicable to all stakeholders and partners, would guide the fuel supply chain towards meeting tangible targets on decarbonisation.

Clarity, including from governments on the role nuclear should play in decarbonisation, would provide clear visibility and potential roadmaps to specific targets.

Today there is no lack of fuel in the industry and it has a strong record of delivery and flexibility to adjust to market circumstances.

John-Paul also spoke about what Urenco is doing to plan for longer-term supply, including its capacity programme, which is refurbishing, extending and potentially expanding enrichment capacity at its four sites.

Currently we have approved three projects at three different sites, which will bring us around 1.6 million of extended SWU capacity, with the first capacity coming online in 2025. We plan to make further announcements as the market need requires.

The WNFC is one of the most respected industry conferences and is hosted jointly by the World Nuclear Association and the Nuclear Energy Institute.
